Assessing the AI revolution
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the field of computer science dedicated to making machines think like humans. Broadly speaking, it involves a combination of computer programming, statistics and a vast amount of data crunching. The applications are extraordinarily wide, including object recognition (for self-driving cars), voice assistants (Siri, Alexa), smart robotics and medical applications, just to name a few.
Research in the field can be traced back to the 1950s. The rapid progress in recent years is being driven by an acceleration in available computing power, as training AI algorithms requires enormous amounts of data.
